A young Indigenous man has died while in custody in a South Australian prison.
Police confirmed the 23-year-old-man died in Port Lincoln Prison on Tuesday, June 4.
According to a Department of Corrections spokesperson, prison staff commenced CPR shortly after the man was found unresponsive in his cell last Tuesday at approximately 10pm.
South Australian Ambulance Service staff arrived shortly afterwards, also commencing CPR, however the man could not be revived.
According to the ABC, local community members confirmed the Indigenous man is not from the local area.
The ABC reported the Office for Correctional Services Review has commenced an investigation with a South Australia Police investigation also underway.
All deaths in custody in South Australia are examined by a coronial investigation.
