The 2024 Pacific Netball Series commenced on Monday with the First Nations Black Swans facing off against Tonga at Brisbane's Nissan Arena.

Organised by PacificAus Sports and hosted by Netball Australia, the series - the fourth edition of the event - is funded by the Australian Government, which has recently extended its partnership with Netball Australia to support netball development in the Pacific.

Tonga enter the series seeking their fourth consecutive series win after narrowly overcoming Samoa in the semi-finals and Fiji in the final last year.

The match was a close contest, with Tonga maintaining a slight lead throughout the game, ultimately winning 62-50.

Notably, it was the Black Swans first time playing together as a team against Tonga, who are ranked eighth in the world.

Gamilaroi woman and Black Swans team captain, Tegan Holland, said she was proud of her team's performance against their formidable opponents.

"Today we were given the opportunity to vs a quality team like Tonga, ranked eighth in the world and it was our first game together," she said.

"Very proud of the girls and excited to see whats ahead on and off the court this week."

Moving forward, Holland she is looking forward to connecting with the team more, as they prepare for four more matches this week.

"This week for us is really about connecting on and off the court," she said.

"As much as we're planning to smash it out on court, we're also doing a lot of cultural stuff off the court which has been really important."

The Black Swans will face off against Singapore on Tuesday.

The Pacific Netball Series is being held from June 10-15 between the Black Swans, Fiji, Namibia, Samoa, Singapore and Tonga.
