Gunawuna Jungai has announced the appointment of Athol Walden as board chair, a decision the organisation says has been met with strong community support.

Gunawuna Jungai is the community-controlled body representing Queensland's Doomadgee community.

In a statement on Wednesday, Gunawuna Jungai said the new chair brings "a wealth of experience from his extensive career in local government, including serving as a sitting Councillor, where he was widely respected for his commitment to community-led outcomes and sound governance".

"Mr Walden is recognised for calm, steady hand in leadership, as well as his capability for rational decision-making and maintaining stability," the organisation said.

Mr Walden said he was honoured to accept the role and committed to serving the community with integrity and purpose.

"Gunawuna Jungai plays an important role for our families and our future. I am proud to take on this responsibility and look forward to working with the Board, leadership team and community to ensure strong governance and positive outcomes," Mr Walden said.

Gunawuna Jungai chief executive Massimo Zaini said the Board and executive team were united in their support of the appointment.

"We look forward to the significant cultural knowledge and leadership that Athol brings as Board Chair," Mr Zaini said.

"His experience, values and steady leadership style will be invaluable, and I am personally looking forward to working closely with him."

Gunawuna Jungai said Mr Walden is widely respected across the Board and throughout the Doomadgee community, describing his appointment as "a positive step toward continued stability and growth for the organisation".
