The NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organisations urged the state government this week to get behind the solutions developed by Aboriginal communities.
Days after the federal government released the Commonwealth's 2024 Closing the Gap Annual Report and 2025 Implementation Plan, the NSW Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organisations (NSW CAPO) acknowledged the progress that has been made to implement the Closing the Gap at the Commonwealth and NSW levels but noted that just five of the 19 Socio Economic Targets are on track to be met nationally.
NSW CAPO Co-Chair, Councillor Charles Lynch, said "every year that these reports are released, we reflect on how far we have to go, not just to 'close the gap', but to transform government so that it delivers on the ambitious commitments in the National Agreement".
"The Aboriginal communities and Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations of NSW have the solutions. The government needs to get behind them. Experience has shown us again and again that's the only way we will see change," he said.
NSW CAPO is the NSW government's partner in implementing the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.
Co-chair John Leha said NSW has "one example of the internationally-leading work we can do when government genuinely partners with NSW CAPO gets behind CAPO's solutions, in the area of Aboriginal Data Sovereignty".
"We call on the NSW Government to reaffirm its commitment to work in partnership and drive progress so that we have many more examples showcase on the national stage," he said.
"Our communities and our Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations have the solutions. It's time for the NSW Government to get behind them."
