The Wilinggin Aboriginal Corporation has a new home in Derby, thanks to a $1 million cash injection from the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation.

With the Wilinggin Aboriginal Corporation (WAC) beefing up its staff in the last four years from two to 24, it needed a bigger space for its expanding operations.

The WAC, which also contributed $3 million for their new HQ at 37 Rowan Street, Derby, oversee 63,000 square kilometres of the eastern Kimberley region in Western Australia.

The 200 sqm property, on the traditional land of the Warrwa and Nyikina peoples, also means WAC has the potential to build more buildings on the land for any future projects.

Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation chief executive Joe Morrison said the funding would enhance WAC's capabilities to care for country now and for future generations.

"Returning and managing Country to Indigenous people and Indigenous organisations is at the core of what we do at the ILSC," he said.

"This building will be vital for the Wilinggin Aboriginal Corporation and will assist in the delivery of their organisational objectives. However, the real asset is the Ngarinyin peoples' continued knowledge of their land."

WAC Chair Nelson O'Reeri said the new space was critical for the organisation to thrive.

"The contribution comes at a time of essential need for a solid base to do Wilinggin's operational and governance work for the betterment of the Ngarinyin people and Country," he said.

The WAC recently signed an Indigenous Land Use Agreement with the Western Australian government, the Traditional Owners of the East Kimberley, and tourism operator G'Day Group.

Under the agreement, 165,000 hectares will be returned to Traditional Owners, allowing the property to be transformed into a nature reserve.
