Kevin Walters has weighed in on recently revealed critiques from star winger Selwyn Cobbo questioning the Broncos coach's abilities.

Cobbo's admissions, first heard on the Back of the 135 podcast in October, drew widespread attention after his chat resurfaced at the weekend.

"He's a good person, like a good bloke, but I don't think he's a good coach," Cobbo said.

"He's not the best coach but he's alright. He's just a good person but I don't reckon he's a coach.

"Even though he has experienced footy, he's been to all those grand finals and that but I feel like he's not a coach. But he's a good bloke, he's a good person (and) does a lot for the club.

"The way he coaches is a bit weird."

The podcast was released just weeks after former Bronco, now Newcastle playmaker, Tyson Gamble similarly questioned Walters' expertise.

Speaking to Channel 9 on Monday, the six-time premiership player and former Queensland's State of Origin coach addressed the matter.

"Certainly it did (hurt). Yeah, it was disappointing," Walters said.

Walters confirmed Cobbo had reached out to make contact as flagged within a statement released by the club shortly after the matter came to light.

"We spoke about it, had a good chat. I won't say (like) father and son but along those lines," Walters said.

"Knowing Selwyn as I do and as we do here at the club I thought that (It was) probably a little bit out of line from Selwyn.

"It's not normally his character to be like that, but he rang me pretty early in the morning not long after it all surfaced and was very apologetic."

The 55-year-old was seemingly able to shake off the jabs directed his way, comparing himself to a seven-time premiership winning coach and former Broncos icon in saying the doubters come for everyone.

"Even the great Wayne Bennett Scottish has got his critics so I'm no different," Walters said.

"I'm a big believer in what we're doing here and how we're going about it and we'll stay on that path and it's great that Selwyn will be on that path as well."

Brisbane head into the 2023 season looking to make amends for a late fall down the ladder to miss the finals this year.
