Secondary students living at Torres Strait Kaziw Meta on Thursday Island will benefit from upgraded accommodation, study and administration facilities following a $4.9 million investment from the Federal Government.

The project has delivered improvements across several areas of the boarding facility, including the Senior Girls' and Junior Girls' wings, the See Kee House study area, the Waiwi Meta Office and the House Parent Flat, the government said on Saturday.

Works also include a new mural celebrating culture and community, whilst signage is designed to strengthen the campus identity and connection to place.

The government says the investment recognised the important role boarding facilities play in enabling students from remote communities to continue their education while remaining connected to their culture and community.

"Education is an important part of Closing the Gap and boarding is the only option to access schooling for many students from the remote outer islands of the Torres Strait," Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy said.

"By creating modern and welcoming spaces at Torres Strait Kaziw Meta, we are helping more students stay connected to their culture and community while accessing educational opportunities.

The upgraded facilities are expected to support student wellbeing, safety and educational outcomes, while providing improved spaces for current and future generations of Torres Strait students studying on Thursday Island.

The upgraded study area now includes large whiteboard walls, desks and laptop stations, allowing it to accommodate larger groups of students and support different learning needs.

Torres Strait Kaziw Meta CEO Thomas Dunsmore said the upgrades demonstrated the organisation's commitment to the students who live at the facility.

"Torres Strait Kaziw Meta is home away from home for our boarders and for them to see upgrades like this is reaffirmation that we're invested in them, their wellbeing and their education," he said.

"As a boarding facility infused with cultural identity, our feature mural and building signage features works by the talented George Gabey, who worked with boarders to create the artwork pieces that have formed our brand identity.

"The refurbishment of See Kee House was crucial as that space is the main study area for our children to complete their schoolwork with our study teachers."
