The Wagyl Kaip Southern Noongar Aboriginal Corporation (WKSNAC) has confirmed its support of a Voice to Parliament.
As part of the process, the regional WA corporation will provide members with opportunities to ask questions and learn more about what the Voice will mean for their region.
The purpose of a Voice to parliament is to advise the Australian parliament and government on matters relating to the social, spiritual and economic wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
WKSNAC was formed in 2021 after being endorsed by members of the Wagyl Kaip Southern Noongar agreement group.
It is now the recognised voice for Wagyl Kaip Southern Noongar people when working with government, business and community sectors.
As one of six regional corporations established as part of the South West Native Title Settlement, that's described as "Australia's first Treaty", it provides a foundation for nation-building.
"We know that having a genuine voice in government decisions is essential for improving outcomes and closing the gaps," WKSN Chairperson Jeanice Krakouer said.
"The Settlement is already providing the structures and resources to enable this at the grassroots level.
"We are now ready to support a national Voice to Parliament, to continue progress towards equality and self-determination for all First Nations peoples.
"We will encourage our members to ask questions and learn more about the Voice, but more importantly to speak up and make sure they're enrolled to vote before this historic referendum."
Since its establishment, the corporation has been building relationships to help maximise the benefits of the Settlement for WKSN people, culture, knowledge of land and sea.
The Voice to Parliament referendum is set to be held sometime in the final quarter of 2023.
