Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in Queensland can now apply for up to $10,000 in scholarship funding to support their goals in education, sport, or the arts.

Applications for the 2025 Young, Black and Proud Scholarships are now open. The program is run by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service (ATSICHS) and supported by the Queensland Family and Child Commission (QFCC).

Queensland's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Commissioner, Natalie Lewis, said she was "so proud" to support the initiative and highlighted the powerful impact it has had over the years.

"Seeing our young people succeed means so much to the community and is a source of collective strength and pride," Commissioner Lewis said.

To be eligible, applicants must be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, aged 25 or under, living in Queensland, and have completed a 715 health check within the past year.

Scholarships are available in three categories — education and training, sport, and the arts — with funding amounts of $2,000, $5,000 and $10,000.

Since it began, the program has helped hundreds of young Queenslanders pursue their passions and overcome barriers to opportunity. In 2024, more than 125 scholarships were awarded to help with travel and accommodation, music and sporting equipment, education costs, and even launching small businesses.

"Every child has the right to succeed in life and to reach their undeniable potential, and it's up to us as a community to help them do this however we can," Commissioner Lewis said.

"That's what these scholarships are about, and I can't wait to see what this year's recipients go on to achieve."

Applications are open until 16 July 2025.
