Johnson, Motlop stake claims for AFL returns

Collingwood forward Ash Johnson and Carlton goal sneak Jesse Motlop have put their hands up for AFL recalls after producing scintillating performances at VFL level at the weekend.

Johnson kicked five goals from 13 disposals and seven marks in the Magpies' 19-point loss to Frankston at Kinetic Stadium on Sunday.

The Kija man was also named Collingwood's best player in the 13.16 (94) to 11.9 (75) loss to the Dolphins.

The 27-year-old from Halls Creek could be a potential replacement for Collingwood forward Brody Mihocek, who is set to miss the remainder of the 2024 AFL season after scans confirmed he ruptured his pectoral tendon in the Pies loss to the Bombers on Friday.

Johnson has played three AFL games this season however is building form at VFL level with ten goals in his past three appearances.

The medium-sized forward has featured in 27 matches at the elite level since being selected by the Magpies in the 2021 mid-season draft.

Carlton young gun Jesse Motlop is another who could be close to a senior recall after an impressive display in front of goal at VFL level last weekend.

Motlop kicked four goals and had 18 disposals in the Blues' 21-point win over Greater Western Sydney on Saturday.

The Larrakia man kicked two important goals in the final term as his team pegged back a seven-point three quarter time deficit to ultimately defeat the Giants 17.12 (114) to 14.9 (93) at Blacktown International Sports Park.

Motlop has had a tumultuous start to his 2024 season after struggling during the pre-season with a toe injury.

He suffered a hamstring strain later in the pre-season and had another setback which further delayed his return.

The 20-year-old is yet to appear for the Blues' AFL team this year, but has made five appearances at VFL level since his return.

The dynamic small forward has posted multiple goals in each of his past three games, culminating in a season-best performance against the Giants.

Motlop was a strong performer for Carlton last year, featuring in 21 games including the club's preliminary final loss to the Brisbane Lions.

In other VFL news, Shane McAdam posted a three-goal performance for the Casey Demons in their big loss to the Brisbane Lions on Saturday.

The Kija and Jaru man has struggled with injury and form since moving from Adelaide to Melbourne during last off-season.
