Scott Boland was the pick of Australia's bowlers on day two of the ICC World Test Championship Final, with all five of Australia's bowlers picking up dismissals to leave Australia in the box seat with three days play remaining.

Boland entered the attack in the fifth over of India's reply to Australia's 469, beginning his spell in typical fashion with a maiden.

He then followed up by dismissing Shubman Gill (13 from 15) two overs later, after the opener shouldered arms to a Boland off-cutter that nipped back down the line, cannoning into the top of off stump.

Cricket data and analytics software Cricviz suggested Boland's delivery to dismiss Gill has been the 'most threatening' delivery of the Test so dar, with the CricViz database indicating it had a 33 per cent chance of taking a wicket.

Following his first outing in English conditions, Boland said he was satisfied with how the Dukes ball came out.

"My first experience with a red ball here and I felt it came out OK personally," he told ABC Sport.

"Nothing changes in my game plan. I am trying to land the ball in a small box and not go away too far from that."

Gill's wicket fell just an over after Pat Cummins (1-36) dismissed Indian captain Rohit Sharma (15 from 26), with the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara (14 from 25) and Virat Kohli (14 fro 31) soon following, to leave India in disarray at 4-71.

Fresh after peeling off his 31st Test century, Australian vice-captain Steve Smith said Boland provides a valuable point of difference to the Australian attack.

"The angles he provides and his ability to hit the stumps from slightly shorter than some of our other bowlers is a big plus," Smith said.

"Shorter guys are a bit skiddier, so if there's any seam movement it gives the ball more chance to move and still hit the sumps.

"The skills he possesses are magnificent. He's turned up every time he's had an opportunity.

Boland finished the day's play with figures of 1-29 from 11 overs, four of which were maidens.

Impressively, he did not conceded a run from his first 17 balls, his 11 overs delivered at an economy of just 2.64 runs per over.

Nathan Lyon (1-4 from 2) picked up Australia's fifth wicket, Indian high scorer Ravindran Jadeja (48 from 51) late in the day's play, leaving India at 5-151 at stumps, 318 runs behind and requiring an additional 118 to force Australia to bat again.

India's Ajinkya Rahane (29* from 71) and Kona Bharat (5* from 14) remained not out, with day three play to continue Friday evening, Australian time.
