Long halves ban for rough conduct at tribunal

Gold Coast's Ben Long has successfully cut his suspension for rough conduct in Saturday's fiery clash against Collingwood down to one game after success at the AFL tribunal on Tuesday.

Long was originally handed a two game ban for his off-ball bump that sent Brayden Maynard down to the turf and sparked a lengthy all-in melee between the sides.

Almost half the ground, from both sides, received fines for the boil-over.

Long was the only player suspended, with both Maynard and Sun Touk Miller escaping bans for umpire contact, deemed not to "constitute the Direct Tribunal Offence of Intentional Contact with an Umpire", the AFL explained in a statement.

Per reports, tribunal chair Timothy Bourke said Maynard had been an antagonist when giving his verdict, which resulted in the impact with Long appearing greater than it was.

Long was initially charged with rough conduct graded intentional and high impact by the MRO after rushing in to bump Maynard from the side following a Suns' goal on the edge of half time.

The resulting melee re-sparked at the break and extended minutes.

Maynard has bruised ribs from the incident, but played out the game, as successfully pointed out by Gold Coast on Tuesday night.

The high impact charge was downgraded to medium, meaning Long is made to miss this weekend's clash with Adelaide but can return to host the Bulldogs on Sunday-week.

Collingwood went on to win Saturday night's match by a kick.

After a hot start to the season off the back of their maiden finals campaign, Gold Coast have slipped to 14th one win outside of the top ten.

Saturday's loss to the Pies was Long's 150th AFL game.
