Indigenous teenager Eathan Henry remains in a stable but serious condition in the ICU at Cairns Hospital after suffering severe injuries in an alleged hit-and-run near the Mount Garnet rodeo grounds.

The 18-year-old has temporarily been brought out of an induced coma and is beginning to face the extent of his injuries.

Family spokeswoman Kara Nugent said Mr Henry had undergone the amputation of his right leg.

He is also being treated for a broken femur, broken hand and broken wrist.

Mr Henry is expected to be placed back into an induced coma in the coming days as he faces multiple surgeries while doctors continue to manage his injuries and support his recovery.

The family said they were grateful his head and spine scans had so far come back clear.

Mr Henry was walking with a friend from the Mount Garnet rodeo grounds towards Mount Garnet about 2.30am on Saturday when they were allegedly struck from behind.

The pair were about 1.5km from the rodeo grounds when they were allegedly hit by a four-wheel-drive with a bull bar travelling in the same direction.

The vehicle allegedly failed to stop and render assistance.

Mr Henry, from Mount Garnet, was flown to Cairns Hospital in a critical condition.

A 25-year-old Mount Garnet man was also taken to Atherton Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Ms Nugent said the family was thankful for the support shown to Mr Henry and his loved ones.

"We would like to sincerely thank the community for the overwhelming support, love and prayers shown to Eathan and his family as we navigate this long and difficult road to recovery and rehabilitation by his side," Ms Nugent said.

"We also thank the media for continuing to keep Eathan's name and story alive across platforms throughout Australia, helping increase the chances of identifying and locating the driver responsible for this heartless and cruel act against a young, culturally connected, talented athlete who had his whole life ahead of him."

Police are urging anyone who travelled on the Kennedy Highway between Atherton and Mount Garnet between 2.30am and 4am on Saturday, May 2, particularly anyone with dashcam footage, to come forward.

The family has also asked anyone with information about a damaged vehicle in the Mount Garnet area over the weekend to contact police.

Ms Nugent said the family remained determined to find answers.

"As a family, we urge the community not to let this matter rest until the driver is found," Ms Nugent said.

"Please continue to share Eathan's story loudly and widely to help pressure the person responsible to come forward, or encourage anyone who may have information, including knowledge of a damaged vehicle that was in the Mount Garnet vicinity over the weekend to contact police.

"The family remains determined to seek justice for Eathan."

Investigations are ongoing.
