The Gold Coast Suns will be closely monitoring the fitness of in-form forward Ben Long ahead of this weekend's clash against the Western Bulldogs at TIO Stadium.

Long was a late withdrawal from last Sunday's Q-Clash against Brisbane due to hamstring tightness.

The Suns' head physiotherapist Lindsay Bull said that the club will assess the 27-year-old at training to determine his availability.

"Ben reported some tightness in his hamstring on Friday last week and we opted to take a conservative approach," Bull said.

"He will progress through training this week before a call on his availability for Round 9 is made."

Long is enjoying a career-best season so far, averaging more than two goals per game and placing third in the entire competition in Champion Data's ranking system.

Suns defender Jy Farrer is expected to be sidelined in the short term after requiring surgery on a fractured finger which he sustained during training.

Gold Coast's Ben Long (right) is hoping to recover from a hamstring injury in time to face the Western Bulldogs in Darwin on Saturday night.

The Western Bulldogs have also been dealt a blow, with experienced key defender Liam Jones sidelined with a torn calf.

"At the end of our main training session last Thursday, Liam suffered a low-grade calf muscle strain during an acceleration effort," the club's head of sports medicine Chris Bell said.

"We will confirm his return-to-play plan in the coming days, but expect him to miss the next couple of weeks."

Young Melbourne utility Ricky Mentha has entered concussion protocols after an incident at training during the week.

"Ricky unfortunately suffered a concussion at our main training session last week," AFL high performance manager Selwyn Griffith said.

"He's through the first couple of phases of the concussion protocol and won't be available for this week. We'll look to progress him as his symptoms allow, with him hopefully returning to playing and training next week."

In more positive news for the Demons, star forward Kysaiah Pickett is expected to be fit to face Hawthorn after hurting his ankle late in last weekend's win over West Coast.

"Koz (Pickett) had an ankle sprain towards the end of the game, but he's recovered well," Griffith said.

"He was part of full training (earlier in the week) – our expectation is he'll have another full training and be available for this week."

GWS midfielder Toby Bedford has avoided serious damage to his eye after being subbed out during half-time of the clash against Sydney.

Bedford suffered from swelling and blurred vision after an incident with the Swans' Lewis Melican, but he is expected to be available for the Giants' match against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.

Karl Amon is also a chance to play after resuming training following a concussion.

The 29-year-old is expected to train fully on Thursday and put his hand up for selection for the club's match against Melbourne on Saturday.

Essendon forward Jade Gresham will miss this weekend's clash against Sydney after suffering an adductor strain against North Melbourne.
