Fremantle's three Indigenous recruits experienced their first smoking ceremony as Dockers at a special event to celebrate the start of the 2025 AFL season.
Superstar Richmond recruit Shai Bolton, Quinton Narkle, snapped from Port Adelaide after six years at Geelong, and South Australian small forward Isaiah Dudley, joined Fremantle players and staff in the Yorkas Nyinning area of Kings Park (Kaarta Koomba) for the ceremony.
An ancient custom for Indigenous Australians, smoking ceremonies acknowledge ancestors and pay respect to the land, waters and sea of Country.
Nyungar man and one of Australia's leading Aboriginal performers, musicians and writers, Uncle Richard Walley, conducted Friday morning's Welcome to Country, while Fremantle's Indigenous and multicultural liaison officer Che Wyatt – who joined the club last year, working closely with Dockers legend Roger Hayden – hosted the ceremony.
Mr Wyatt, a Wongatha, Yamatji, Noongar and Adnyamathanha man who shadowed Mr Hayden - the club's Next Generation Academy coach – last year, has enhanced Fremantle's strong connection to Indigenous and multicultural players, one deeply entrenched in their history and culture.
On Friday he paid tribute to Fremantle's trio of new Indigenous players: Bolton (a Whudjuk/Ballardong Noongar man), Narkle (a Whudjuk/Ballardong Noongar man) and Dudley, a Narrunga man who has long impressed the Dockers playing for Central Districts in the SANFL.
"Shai, Quinton and Isaiah have not only brought their talent to our club, they've strengthened the club's connection to family with their strong family values," Mr Wyatt said.
"Almost everything they do is centred around family.
"Their spirit and connection have been awesome to witness off field, and we can't wait to see what they can do on field."
Fremantle has had more than 50 First Nations men and women drafted to the club since forming in 1995, including Mr Hayden - a key diversity champion at the Dockers since retiring in 2011.
Dudley's recruitment via the pre-season supplemental selection period completed Fremantle's 2025 list, and was announced during a lunch before the Indigenous All Stars game against the Dockers at Optus Stadium a fortnight ago.
He adds talent to an already superstar Fremantle attack this season, led by high-flying, mercurial Bolton, who arrived via a trade with Richmond in the off season, and Narkle, who showed glimpses of brilliance and forward nous in previous stints at the Cats and Power.
Dudley, 21, kicked 21 goals in 20 SANFL games for Central District last year and was third in the club's best and fairest.
"Dudley was a very talented junior footballer and had a few injuries and things didn't go his way," Fremantle head of player personnel David Walls said.
"But we have kept an eye on him at Central Districts… he has had high score assists in the SANFL and hits the scoreboard himself."
Also attending Friday's special ceremony were Fremantle board members, including vice president and Noongar woman Colleen Hayward, past Fremantle champion Dale Kickett, with his wife Kathy and their family, and Indigenous AFLW player Gabby Beiden-Wegg Webster and AFLW coach Lisa Webb.
Fremantle begins its 2025 AFL season away to Geelong on Saturday at 10.20am WST.
