Management of the Crossing Inn, one of two pubs in Fitzroy Crossing, has destroyed their stock rather than have staff guard the premises.

The Inn, which was severely flooded, is owned by Indigenous business group Leedal Foundation. Leedal executive chair Patrick Green told National Indigenous Times that the stock was destroyed so Inn employees and police could focus on the impact of the flood and the recovery work.

"It was better that we destroy it so we don't have distractions, we don't have to have guards guarding it or continually reacting to break-ins," he said.

"So, we destroyed the alcohol so we could have our staff and other essential workers like the police help in responding to the emergency rather than worry about the alcohol and have alcohol-related problems in the community.

"We didn't want to have people drunk in the community creating havoc while police and other essential services are required for emergency situations."

Mr Green said the recovery was going to be a "huge" undertaking.

"The water has receded and there is a huge clean up; we need to support and recognise the efforts of the volunteers from the community and the services who came to assist," he said.

"It was one thing to have the flood, now it is time for the clean up and it is going to be a big job, cleaning mud from people's homes. Members of my family are out there helping the small businesses clean up."
