Three young inmates have safely come down from the roof of the notorious Banksia Hill Juvenile Detention Centre.

On Friday the youth climbed on to the roof of the Western Australia children's prison.

On Saturday a WA Department of Justice spokesperson told National Indigenous Times staff at Banksia Hill "managed the incident with minimal disruption to the site".

"It was resolved last night when the three young people descended voluntarily with no injuries and minimal damage to infrastructure," they said.

Banksia Hill has long been the centre of controversy, with high rates of self-harm revealed in 2022 and over 50 letters of complaint lodged by the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA in 2023.

The centre, in which Indigenous children are severely over-represented, is the subject of an ongoing class action by current and former detainees.

The maximum-security facility houses sentenced and unsentenced boys and girls in separate units and, apart from Unit 18 at Casuarina Prison, is the only detention centre for children in the state.
