An Indigenous man has died in custody at Western Australia's Hakea Prison.

The 41-year-old was found unresponsive in his cell after being found by prison staff on Monday morning.

A WA Department of Justice spokesperson said "Preliminary reports indicated the man had suffered a medical episode".

The spokesperson said officers and paramedics who arrived at the prison around 10:30am attempted to revive the man, however he could not be saved.

He was later declared deceased at the maximum security facility in Canning Vale, south of Perth.

A statement confirmed the man's death is being investigated by WA Police as per all deaths in custody, with a report to be prepared for the coroner.

The man is the second Indigenous person to have died recently in custody in Western Australia, after 16-year-old Cleveland Dodd took his own life in Casuarina Prison's Unit 18 facility last month.

It is the second Indigenous death in Hakea Prison this year, after 40-year-old Ashley Bropho was found dead in his cell in March.

According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, 80 people have died in custody since the beginning of the year, with 16 of those deaths being Indigenous people.
