A Zenadh Kes school has invested in helping its students and staff get their driver's license with a new learner car.

Torres Strait Kaziw Meta's boarding students and house parents welcomed what the Waibene (Thursday Island) school has dubbed a vehicle of independence for the community.

Kennisha Matthew is in year 12 at TSKM.

"For me, this means freedom," Ms Matthew, a senior boarder and cultural leader at the school said, adding she's looking forward to learning behind the wheel.

"This gives opportunities for future boarders to learn to drive here instead of waiting to go home on the holidays."

The ute was blessed in song at a recent gathering.

Ms Matthew's peer said Samson Akiba he's keen to be able to get around town and further in the future, with Olita Agie also excited to get on the road.

"I have my learners, and I'm keen to start driving lessons with Uncle Jimmy next term," Ms Agie said.

Local accredited driving instructor Uncle Jimmy O'Cloudy will be helping teach the schoolkids and staff.

It's the first time the option to apply for learner's licenses and lodge driving hours via the school.

The car, wrapped in artwork by local Torres Strait Islander artist George Gabey, comes thanks to program funders, including the Queensland and federal governments. Funds for application fees and lessons are covered with the support, TSKM chief executive Thomas Dunsmore explained.

Mr Dunsmore has encouraged everyone who can to take up the opportunity.

"The whole concept is to ensure that the Torres Strait Kaziw Meta community are empowered, and for our boarders to feel prepared to graduate high school," he said at the blessing.

The car's blessing was led by Father Tom Stephen with an accompanying chorus hymn from House Parents.

Those present began gathering for photos and a good look at the new ute as soon as formalities concluded.

"If you see our boarders on the road, give us a wave," Mr Dunsmore said.
