The colour pink dappled Rubibi / Broome's Male oval as the sun set on Thursday afternoon, while hundreds gathered in pink clothing for a vigil honouring the life of Kumanjayi Little Baby.
Nyikina and Bardi woman Cherie Heslington, who organised the vigil, addressed the crowd saying "words cannot express the deep sadness we feel for her loss, rest peacefully in the arms of angels".
Mourners lay candles on the green grass as Yawuru Elder Diana Appleby told mourners to "light a candle for this little one"
"Put your message from your liyan so we as a nation grieve to find solace in one another, to strengthen us, as well as the families across the nation," she said.
Five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby was reported missing from the Old Timers / Ilyperenye town camp in Mparntwe / Alice Springs last weekend, sparking a major search operation. Five days later, her body was found about five kilometres south of the camp.
Last Thursday night, police arrested 47-year-old Jefferson Lewis near the Charles Creek town camp after he had also not been seen since the child's disappearance.
Northern Territory Police charged Mr Lewis with murder on Sunday and two other charges that cannot be reported.
Vigils have been held this evening across cities and regional towns across the country, to coincide with a candlelight gathering in Mparntwe / Alice Springs as communities joined the family in mourning during sorry business.
