PNG, Aust visit strategic - Widodo

Indonesian President Joko Widodo says his visits to Australia and Papua New Guinea are very strategic for his country.

Widodo kicked off his two-day visit to Australia and Papua New Guinea travelling to Sydney on Monday evening taking off from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, Jakarta, on Monday, 3 July 2023.

Jokowi boarded from the Indonesian Air Force Base Halim Perdanakusuma on Presidential Aircraft Indonesia – 1.

He is accompanied by several members of the ministry, including Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Ministry for State Secretary Pratikno, Ministry of Investment/Head of Investment Coordinating Board Bahlil Lahadalia.

The POTROI is also accompanied by Directorate General of Protocol and Consular Affairs Andy Rachmianto, Presidential Military Secretary Rear Admiral Hersan, Presidential Escort Force Commander Major General Rafael Granada Baay, and Deputy of Protocols, Press, and Media of Presidential Secretary Bey Machmudin.

In his departing statement President Widodo said Australia and Papua New Guinea were Indonesia's close neighbours and good friends, as well as strategic partners in the Pacific.

"…my limited delegation and I will make a two-day visit to Sydney, Australia and one day to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

"This visit has a very strategic value for Indonesia, because later in Australia I will conduct a series of Annual Leaders' Meetings 2023 with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese," President Widodo said.

"This working visit has strategic values for Indonesia," President Jokowi added.

"A number of priority agendas that have been discussed in Australia were mainly investment, trade because there has been a quite drastic increase in trade and investment from Australia, then in the health and energy transition sector as well as increasing human resources. And, on July 5, I will continue my journey to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. This is a return visit at the invitation of Prime Minister James Marape.

"Apart from Prime Minister Marape, I will also meet with the Governor General sir Bob Dadae and attend the first Indonesia-Papua New Guinea business forum.

President Widodo said in his conference that the investment and trade both in Australia and PNG are the main priority agendas.

On Wednesday, Jokowi jetted into Port Moresby to conduct a meeting with Prime Minister Marape and the Governor General Sir Bob Dadae.

"Australia and Papua New Guinea are our close neighbors, good friends, and strategic partners to Indonesia in the Pacific," he said.

"In addition to fulfill invitation from Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea James Marape, I will also meet Governor-General of Papua New Guinea Sir Bob Dadae and attend the first business forum between Indonesia and PNG."
