NRL stars Latrell Mitchell and Jack Wighton have spoken out amid mass attention surrounding an alleged incident at the weekend.

On Sunday, news broke of a physical altercation involving the two leading to both men spending the night in a Canberra lockup charged with fighting in a public space.

Witnesses downplayed the incident, described as two mates 'wrestling' out the front of local nightclub Friction after Wighton was allegedly asked to leave by venue bouncers.

Dramatic footage of Mitchell screaming in distress while surrounded by police close to 4am Sunday morning later surfaced.

The 25-year-old Biripi man is understood to have also been charged with resisting arrest.

Following their release from police around at 10am the pair travelled separately to Sydney to join Indigenous All Stars teammates ahead of their flight to New Zealand on Monday morning.

On Monday both men issued a statement via their management No Limit Boxing, a promotion company who have expanded to represent other athletes.

"For legal reasons we cannot comment on the charges that are before the Court at the moment. However, we wanted to express remorse for putting ourselves in the position to embarrass our Clubs and the NRL over the weekend," it read.

"We were there to celebrate Jack's 30th with family and friends. While everyone enjoyed a great night, we understand that our wrestle, as harmless as we believed it to be, was a poor decision and may have looked bad. We are sorry for this, and know that we need to be better when in public.

"We remain great friends, and are looking forward to proudly representing our community at All Stars this weekend."

The Indigenous All Stars take on the Maori All Stars in their annual NRL season curtain raiser at Rotorua International Stadium on Saturday, February 11.
