Scott Boland has been confirmed as the replacement for Josh Hazlewood in Australia's men's XI for the second Test against India, starting Friday.

Cricket Australia announced their side with just one change - Boland's recall, with all rounder Mitch Marsh holding his spot following injury concerns after the home side's 295-run loss to India in Perth.

Boland, 35, will take the pink ball for his 11th Test and first since the opening matches of the Ashes in England.

The Gulidjan quick spent the entirety of last summer touring in the squad without breaking into the team.

His entry comes after getting at look at the Indian batting order in the weekend's Prime Minister's XI tour match at Manuka Oval, and with Australia A at the MCG last month.

"We are utilising the opportunity to maintain Scott Boland's match fitness in his preparations as part of the Test squad," Australian chief selector George Bailey said last week.

In the first Australia A-India A contest, Worimi seamer Brendan Doggett took 6/15 in the first innings (7/58 for the match) before being called into the Test squad amid injuries over the weekend.

The last time Boland used the pink ball in Adelaide, two summers ago, he helped knock over the West Indies order with a three-wicket maiden.

"There's normally a little bit of nip which suits Scotty quite well…it's pretty awesome to have Scotty come straight in," Australian skipper Pat Cummins said on Thursday.

Australia begins efforts at a rare turnaround - a series win at home after losing the first Test, in a bid to reclaim the Border-Gavasker trophy for the first time in a decade and keep slim hopes of defending their World Test Championship mantle when play starts at Adelaide Oval.

Muruwari allrounder Ash Gardner started her international summer in the Australian women's side's first ODI against India at Brisbane's Allan Border Field on Thursday afternoon.
