Third South Australian council drops Acknowledgement of Country

Naracoorte Lucindale Council has removed an Acknowledgement of Country from its council meeting procedures.

Late in 2023, Playford and Northern Areas local governments made similar changes, amidst a push across the country to roll back Indigenous representation at various levels of government after the defeat of the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

In Victoria last month, the state opposition backflipped on their support for Treaty. In Queensland, the LNP performed a similar 180 degree turn days after the resounding 'No' vote on October 14.

At Naracoote Lucindale council meetings from here on, Mayor Patrick Ross will open with the vague phrase "We acknowledge and respect our complex history. We welcome everyone to build our future together.", rather than acknowledging the Traditional Owners of the Limestone Coast.

The previous Acknowledgement of Country said: "We acknowledge and respect the traditional owners of the ancestral lands of the Limestone Coast. We acknowledge elders past and present and we respect the deep feelings of attachment and relationship of Aboriginal peoples to Country."

The ABC reports that the mayor advocated the change to meeting procedures.

Mr Ross told last week's council meeting the welcome should be "simple" and "inclusive", and also claimed the current welcome did not reflect the growing diversity of the local population.

"Our complex history is complex purely around the diverse nature from where people have come, so that's the diverse history, and to mention every single entity within that would make for quite a long welcome," he said.

Reconciliation South Australia chief executive Jason Downs told the ABC the organisation was "rather sad" about the move and local Elders he had spoken to were "rather disheartened".

He said Acknowledgements of Country recognised the leaders who were looking after the land before colonisation as well as Traditional Owners today.

"It's creating a level of visibility that isn't always there," Mr Downs told the ABC.

He said Reconciliation South Australia had offered to run a workshop on the importance of Acknowledgements of Country in Naracoorte via a media release but was yet to contact the council directly.
