Footwear brand's trend setting Indigenous collaboration in high demand

Despite launching in 2016, Australian-founded footwear brand TWOOBS has remained in high demand.

This month, TWOOBS announced they have re-stocked the highly-popular Cungelella Art x TWOOBS collection after break-the-internet levels of interest saw the first offering of the collaboration sell out promptly earlier this year.

First launching in 2021, TWOOBS unveiled their second collaboration with contemporary Indigenous Artist collective, Cungelella Art in June.

The sell-out second collaboration with Cungelella Art is a 6-piece sandal collection with prints designed by Cungelella Art founder and proud descendant of the Kalkadoon tribe of the Mount Isa region, Glenda McCulloch.

The offering was so popular it sold out in a matter of days before restock became available in September.

McCulloch founded Cungelella Art in 2019 as a vehicle for sharing her culture through modern Aboriginal art. It soon expanded as a collective to include her sisters, Jaunita Doyle, Dale Bruce and Cheryl Perez.

She and her sisters live on Kalkatungu Country and paint the story of their homelands.

"We are always inspired by our surroundings, the rock faces, the red rust dirt and the harsh spinifex growing wild, and of course the soft pink sunsets," McCulloch said.

This value towards her and her sister's local community, environment and culture is evident in McCulloch's choice of rich earthy hues throughout the entire Cungelella Art x TWOOBS sandal collection.

TWOOBS and the team at Cungelella Art also ensures $5 from every pair of shoes sold will be donated to Injilinji Preschool & Kindergarten in Mount Isa - a local kindergarten selected by Cungelella Art.

Opened in the 1970s by three local Aboriginal women, Injilinji Preschool & Kindergarten is a non-profit Aboriginal organisation and the only Aboriginal kindergarten running in the small town today.

Created and founded by sisters Jess and Stef Dadon, TWOOBS was designed after the two creatives discovered a lack of beautiful, yet comfortable shoes.

Delivering a curated range of vegan, cruelty-free and environmentally sustainable sandals, TWOOBS footwear features sugar cane soles, lightweight lycra and vegan leather.

"We're a comfy footwear brand that's asking uncomfy questions. While we don't have all the answers, we're putting our best foot forward to set a new standard for sandals everywhere," the TWOOBS team said.

Further aligning with TWOOBS commitment to sustainability and the environment, the curated 6-style sandal collection (including one children's sandal) is made from vegan and planet-friendly materials including recycled Lycra and sugarcane.

Being 80% recycled and 100% vegan, TWOOBS commitment to our earth and its people has also seen the brand remain significantly popular Australia-wide.

Each purchase is carbon-neutral and shipped satchel-free. TWOOBS also offers a take-back program, which involves the brand recycling shoes at the end of their life in exchange for a $10 voucher.

With TWOOBS commitment to sustainability and Cungelella Art's artistic talent, it's not hard to see why the limited edition collection of footwear sold out so quickly.

With the first Cungelella Art x TWOOBS collaboration selling out in under two hours online, the collaboration's third release has brought similar levels of hype as previous drops.

Whilst the news of future collaborations with First Nations Artists or another collaboration with Cungelella Art is yet to be released, critics are coining TWOOBS the 2023 footwear brand to watch.
