The federal government will invest $552,000 to expand the Winmarra Foundation's Emerging Leaders Program for another two years, backing a community-led initiative designed to support young First Nations people in regional New South Wales.

The funding, announced by the Albanese government, will allow the program to continue through 2026-27 after a successful pilot in Brewarrina last year, which supported 10 young First Nations men.

Winmarra Foundation co-founder and director Latrell Mitchell welcomed the funding, saying it would help the organisation expand its work and create a lasting impact in rural communities.

"Every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of where they live," he said.

"At Winmarra Foundation, our vision is to walk alongside young people on their journey, helping them build confidence, stay connected to culture, and grow into the next generation of community leaders."

Developed in response to community priorities, the program was designed with significant input from local Elders, who continue to play a central role in delivering cultural guidance and mentoring.

Federal Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy said investing in young people would strengthen communities.

"This investment will help more First Nations young people in regional NSW stay connected to culture, strengthen their confidence and build pathways into education, training and work," she said.

"The Winmarra Emerging Leaders Program has been developed by community, for community, with Elders guiding and supporting the next generation."

The Emerging Leaders Program focuses on strengthening cultural identity while helping participants build leadership skills and transition into education, training and employment through mentoring, cultural connection and community engagement.

The government says the funding would expand opportunities for more First Nations young people across regional NSW and contribute to Closing the Gap priorities by improving pathways into education and work while strengthening social and emotional wellbeing.
