Melburnians are being encouraged to embrace and deepen their understanding of the city's Aboriginal history during NAIDOC Week.

A number of events are taking place across Naarm (Melbourne) this week celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and achievements.

The Elizabeth Street pop-up library will be giving away books by Victorian First Nations authors including Tony Birch, Aunty Joy Murphy, Evelyn Araluen and others.

The Deadly Books Giveaway, beginning at 2pm on Sunday, includes works for adults and children to choose from with a limit of one book per person.

Different books will be available each day or until they have been exhausted.

The pop-up library will feature live readings from poet and performer Laniyuk (Larrakia, Kungarakan, Gurindji) and radio and television presenter Shelley Ware (Yankanjatjara, Wirangu).

Other NAIDOC Week events include a Melbourne Zoo community day, live music at Sounds of Country, the Yarn + Bling Makers Workshop, the NAIDOC in the City program at Hyde Park north and the Finders Keepers Market.

NAIDOC Week runs from July 2-9.
