Re-elected Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy has hailed a victory for "respect, kindness, compassion, strength, determination" and a "strong vision for the future".

The NT Senator spoke to supporters in Darwin on Saturday night, and said the public had rejected division.

"I would like to acknowledge the Larrakia people on whose beautiful land we gather tonight, and acknowledge the lands across this wonderful country Australia of First Nations people and I am very thankful to all Australians for trusting in the Prime Minister and his team to lead this country in a way we know matters with respect, with kindness, with compassion, with strength, determination and an absolutely strong vision for the future," Senator McCarthy said.

The acknowledgement of country raised a large cheer from the crowd

"Tonight, the people of the Northern Territory have joined with all Australians to say, we love our country, we do not want to see division in this country, especially with our First Nations people," Senator McCarthy continued.

"We have been given a mandate tonight, to persevere through a better way for all Australians, especially the First Nations people of Australia."

This comment sparked cheers and applause from the crowd.

"I'm incredibly proud to work beside Luke Gosling (the Member for Solomon) and Marion Scrymgour (the Member for Lingiari)," she continued.

"I thank the people of the Northern Territory for putting your faith in us to serve you again, and we do that with absolute pride, but at the same time with determination because we know we have much to do.

"For the people in the bush, who have given us all their support – the booths have said tonight, right across the Northern Territory, we've had swings in Katherine towards us, we've had swings in Tennant Creek, and thank you Marion Scrymgour and the Labor team across the bush and here in Darwin, and Palmerston.

"We are here for you, and we thank you."

Ms Scrymgour secured a healthy swing of 6.1 per cent to the ALP to win a comfortable victory for her second term, while Mr Gosling won a fourth term in his seat, the first MP for Solomon ever to do so, despite a six per cent swing to the Country Liberals.
