A young Aboriginal man has died in custody in Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison in Western Australia.

The 31-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell Wednesday afternoon.

The WA Department of Justice said staff provided first aid to the prisoner until paramedics arrived.

The man was taken by ambulance to Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital, where he was declared deceased.

Preliminary reports indicate there were no suspicious circumstances, the Department said in a statement on Thursday.

WA Police will prepare a report for the State Coroner, as is mandatory for all deaths in custody.

Almost 600 Indigenous people have died in custody across Australia since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody made more than 300 recommendations in 1991, many of which remain unimplemented to this day.
