Eastern Arrente engineer and QUT PhD student David Corporal will travel to Doomadgee this weekend to share his passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics with the community.
Mr Corporal will take part in the Dumaji Muzik Festival at the Doomadgee Rodeo Grounds on Saturday, October 3, as an Inspiring Australia Queensland ambassador.
The visit will give community members an opportunity to hear about his pathway through engineering, science and the space sector, including a 10-week internship at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California in 2024.
Mr Corporal is currently completing a PhD through the QUT Faculty of Science, with his research involving mass spectrometry and analytical chemistry applied to atmospheric science.
He hopes the Doomadgee visit can show young people where an interest in science and education can lead.
"Outreach like this allows the community to directly connect with scientists and engineers and see what we do," Mr Corporal said.
"I take pride in being able to show the community where education can take you and what it's done for me.
"This trip is important because it allows me to pay forward the belief and encouragement that I've received."
Mr Corporal's pathway into the space sector has previously featured in National Indigenous Times after he was selected for the National Indigenous Space Academy in 2024.
He was one of five Indigenous STEM students chosen for the program before travelling to the United States for a placement at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
His interest in space began more than a decade earlier after watching videos of former International Space Station commander Chris Hadfield, with Mr Corporal setting himself the long-term goal of becoming an astronaut.
Before travelling to NASA, he described the opportunity as another step towards a career focused on space exploration.
"Space exploration is the ultimate frontier, and my passion is being able to push this frontier by helping overcome the engineering challenges we face," Mr Corporal said at the time.
"Throughout my journey, I have been grateful to have the support of my family and many others, and now NISA and QUT as well."
Mr Corporal was also named Engineer of the Year at the 2024 Australian Space Awards, where he was listed as an engineer with Boeing.
His Doomadgee appearance continues his work as an Inspiring Australia Queensland ambassador, through which he shares his experiences and encourages greater interest in science and engineering.
