Kununurra's Mirima Dawang Woorlab-gerring Language and Cultural Centre has received a Lotterywest grant of just over $1.1 million to support the creation of a new community learning space dedicated to preserving the Miriwoong language.

Miriwoong is the traditional language of the Miriwoong people in the East Kimberley, and is deeply tied to identity.

Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna congratulated the centre on securing the funding, saying it would play an important role in strengthening language and culture in the East Kimberley.

"This funding will support the refurbishment of the language centre, including landscaping, interior upgrades and the installation of smart solar panels," she said.

Ms D'Anna said the investment would help ensure Miriwoong language, culture and knowledge were preserved and passed on to future generations.

"This important investment will help ensure Miriwoong language, culture and knowledge are strengthened and passed on to future generations," she said.

Mirima Dawang Woorlab-gerring is a long-established Aboriginal language and cultural centre and plays a central role in cultural transmission in the East Kimberley.
