Members of the Bundjalung and Cabbage Tree Island, near Wardell, New South Wales communities have joined arms with Desert Pea Media, an OG Community Media Organisation to unveil a new track titled Wanna Go Home under the moniker 'Cabbo Crew.'
The music for the song has been skilfully produced by the talented rapper and Larrakia artist, Jimblah.
The Indigenous community of Cabbage Tree Island has endured immense hardship due to the devastating North Coast floods of 2022. As a result, the community was compelled to seek temporary housing while the rebuilding process of the 'Cabbo' community takes place.
Following this incident, the youth and community members, in collaboration with Desert Pea Media and JALI Lands Council, have united to produce a song, music video, and short film.
These creative works encapsulate the rich heritage of Cabbo, highlighting the community's deep bond with their land, the obstacles they confront, their resilience and their desire to restore the island.
Desert Pea Media, a charitable organisation with a 20-year history of empowering and amplifying the voices of young people and communities, has been actively engaged in Indigenous communities across Australia.
They were originally invited by JALI Local Aboriginal Land Council to collaborate on a short film/documentary project titled NGUMBINY (HOME).
The success of this project prompted the community to seek funding for the creation of a song and music video that specifically captured the perspectives of the youth.
'Wanna Go Home' is an emotive song that serves as a reflection of the Cabbage Tree Island community's journey, showcasing the remarkable strength and resilience of the young individuals from the island.
Crafted through a collaborative effort involving Desert Pea Media, the song boasts captivating vocals and a melodic rhythm that both inspire and forge connections.
These two remarkable productions, filmed on-site at Cabbage Tree Island and its surrounding areas, will have their grand premiere on July 5th at Ballina Coast High School.
Desert Pea Media co-founder and producer, Toby Finlayson noted "the past 12 months have been an incredibly difficult time for the Northern Rivers community."
"The strength and resilience, and unique perspectives of the Cabbo Community will speak for many people in our region and are an inspiration to all of us. It's been an honour to be a part of these projects."
