Young Hawks forward Tyler Brockman has made a fairytale return to footy by kicking three goals in his first AFL game since 2021 and spurring his club to their first win of the season in the process.

The young Indigenous player provided the difference for Hawthorn over North in Launceston on Saturday, as his side tried to get on the board in 2023 and stop the Kangaroos' unbeaten run to start the year under former Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson.

The 20-year-old sat out the entire 2022 win injury after playing 11 games in his debut season the previous year.

Last week, he kicked three on his return to footy in the VFL against Sydney and carried that form into his first crack in the senior side.

After the Hawks got the jump on the Kangaroos early, Brockman kicked two majors in the second quarter to widen the gap to 25 points at half time.

When North rallied in the third and got within a kick early in the final term, he popped up once again with six minutes on the clock to take away some pressure and nail his third goal with a right-foot snap to keep his side's noses in front.

The Western Australian had another chance just moments later to all but ice the game pulled before his final shot for the afternoon dragged right.

He did however provide the outlet handpass to give Dylan Moore a look at goal and take the margain beyond doubt in the Hawks' next forward entry.

At the final siren Hawthorn lead North 11.14 (80) to 9.7 (61).

"A tough year (last year), doing the shoulder. I was just excited to get out here the year after and hopefully play some good footy," Brockman said after the match.

Brockman looked free, energetic and calm with ball in hand throughout a match where Hawks coach Sam Mitchell gave him licence to take the game on.

"He just let me do my thing - do what I want to get on the scoreboard, which is good. I love playing that way," Brockman said.

Hawthorn face Geelong in their Easter Monday clash in round four on April 10.
