Indigenous representative sides from each state and territory will convene in Naarm/Melbourne in mid-September for an inaugural First Nations tournament, Netball Australia announced Wednesday.

The pilot tournament, set to be held at Victoria's State Netball Centre, comes after development from all eight member organisations across the country with the governing body, in the latest piece of high-performance investment for the future of Indigenous representation at the elite level.

It follows the introduction of pilot a First Nations coaching course and the debut of the Black Swans national side at the Pacific Series in June.

Netball Australia First Nations Engagement Lead Ali Tucker-Munro is keen to see the tournament prove a "game changer".

"I'm just super excited with this piece of a broader puzzle that's been crafted up over the last 12 months," Tucker-Munro told National Indigenous Times.

"I think again, it is another way in which we continue to look to strengthen grassroots connections within our sport with our First Nations mob."

Tucker-Munro said it's likely teams arriving for the tournament will boast lineups of players both already in high-performance pathways and untapped talent.

"Capped at the under 23 age bracket, intention is there to give those previously unlucky at state selections their opportunity, as well as uncovering emerging talent and potentially bringing some players back into the fold," she said.

First Nations umpires, coaches and officials are also being provided the platform.

"It comes back to that mantra; you've got see it to be it," Tucker-Munro said.

"It comes back to being a vehicle by which we can get together, lean into, learn from one another, and build those connections that's needed across our sport."

Netball Australia chief executive Stacey West said the pilot will provides a foundation for the sport to grow on.

"The 2024 pilot First Nations Tournament marks the first step of a national First Nations netball competition," West said.

"It will provide the opportunity for Netball Australia and its Member Organisations to develop what an ongoing first Nations tournament can grow to become as our sport moves forward on its collective First Nations journey."

Netball Australia have partnered with Super Netball major partner Suncorp, the Confident Girls Foundation and Visit Victoria for the tournament, set for September 13-15 in Naarm.

The Black Swans will come together for a second time at the Australian Netball Championships next month.
