Emerging Fitzroy Crossing designer, Letticia Shaw, has arrived in Paris in advance of presenting her fashion brand, Ticia Designs, at Paris Fashion Week's Flying Solo Runway presentation.

The celebrated Gooniyandi/Ngaanyatjarra designer hails from just outside of Fitzroy Crossing in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Having spent her childhood learning Gooniyandi language and culture from her grandparents, Shaw has an extremely close-knit relationship with Fitzroy Crossing and the nearby Gillarong community.

"The name of my designs is Ticia, it's inspired by my culture and the way I was brought up in the small community called Gillarong, and also what I was taught by my grandparents Jack and Sarah Shaw," Shaw said.

"They would take us camping out bush, fishing, hunting they showed all their grandchildren how they lived going out bush."

When discussing how Ticia Designs initially began, Shaw said her creative process actually started in her early teenage years.

"It started years ago when I was only just about 12 to 13 years old, I started sketching", she said.

"For launching my designs, it started in Kalgoorlie NAIDOC week back in 2004, at the Kalgoorlie Town Hall."

Fast forward to 2023 and Shaw is headed to Paris Fashion Week for what will be the designer's very first presentation on an international runway.

It is also important to note that unlike most designers who showcase at international Fashion Week's, Shaw actually found and pitched for this opportunity herself.

"It is the first time for me to showcase my work out of Australia", Shaw told Style Up.

"I saw on Facebook about how Flying Solo helps with struggling designers so I thought I would email them and send photos of my work and they approved of me coming to showcase in Paris."

The Australian fashion designer will also be joined by two emerging First Nations models, Kahlia Rogers and Letisha Davies.

Whilst Shaw has not worked with either of the young women before she is thrilled to be providing other Indigenous individuals with opportunity and international exposure.

"I haven't worked with them (Kahlia and Letisha) before but It was suggested to me because I wanted to give the experience to two Indigenous models to also experience doing a fashion show in Paris," she said.

"They will also will be modelling in Melbourne Fashion Week in October."

Also very grateful to be provided with this international opportunity, the two young women are thrilled to be heading overseas and welcome the opportunities that will stem from this.

"This will be my first time working with Letticia. I'm so honoured and excited to model and showcase Ticia Designs to the world at Paris Fashion Week," said model Kahlia Rogers.

"This is going to broaden my horizon and show other Aboriginal girls that you can do anything in life and take every opportunity… you never know how many doors it can open for you."

Despite Shaw's show not scheduled until October 1, the Kimberley-based designer shows no signs of slowing down, with Melbourne Fashion Week already locked in upon her return to Australia in October.

"I will be showcasing in Melbourne Fashion Week as well," she said.

As we continue to celebrate the series of emerging First Nations designers who are crossing more borders than we can count, Shaw's determination and work ethic are a reminder that sometimes the best opportunities are the ones we find and secure ourselves.

Whilst it is fantastic to be provided opportunities by others, it is when our talent speaks for itself that we feel truly rewarded.

Letticia Shaw will showcase her Ticia Designs collection at Paris's Flying Solo Runway event on October 1 at the La Galerie Bourbon in Paris, France.

Ms Shaw's trip would not have been possible without the generosity of sponsors Roy Hill, Ms Gina Rinehart AO, Marra Worra Worra Aboriginal Corporation and Leedal Pty Ltd.
