The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service has appointed Tyne McConnon to the position of principal family and child safety lawyer.
Ms McConnon's appointment comes after she held the position of TALS' senior family and child safety lawyer for Tasmania from August 2020 to April 2022.
TALS principal lawyer, Hannah Phillips, said Ms McConnon is an experienced family lawyer and advocate for Indigenous communities.
"We are very pleased to announce Ms McConnon as the Principal Family and Child Safety Lawyer at TALS," Ms Philip said.
"This is a newly created position to support the growing needs in the child safety, family violence and family law space in Aboriginal communities across Tasmania."
Previous to her roles at TALS, Ms McConnon was based in Western Australia where she worked for South Headland's Legal Aid, Port Headland's Aboriginal Family Law Services and Perth-based firm, Allen & Jasnic Lawyers.
TALS chief executive Jake Smith welcomed Ms McConnon's appointment.
"Tyne's experience working with Aboriginal communities and her professional experiences in child safety, family violence and family law, will support the increasing demand on our service," he said.
"We are delighted to have her join the team supporting Aboriginal people across the state."
TALS says Ms McConnon's role will include supporting the TALS family law and child safety team whilst being responsible for managing the TALS Family Violence Prevention Legal Service, SiS (support, information, strength).
Ms McConnon said she was looking forward to working with the TALS team to support Aboriginal communities across Tasmania.
"TALS has seen significant growth in legal services in the areas of family law, child safety and family violence," she said.
"I will be working closely with the TALS team and communities to advocate for the needs of Aboriginal people and communities in these systems to ensure that Aboriginal children are safe and families and communities are supported."
