A 56-year-old Aboriginal man died in custody at Bethesda Hospital Thursday morning.

The WA Department of Justice said the man, who was terminally ill, was transferred from Perth's Casuarina Prison to Fiona Stanley Hospital on 8 November.

On 20 November, the man was relocated to Bethesda Hospital for palliative care.

WA Police will prepare a report for the State Coroner, as is mandatory for all deaths in custody.

More than 600 Indigenous people have died in custody since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody brought down its findings in 1991.
