Australian Football Hall of Fame inductee Mark Williams has used his platform in joining the illustrious club to advocate for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
During his speech, facing the game's greats and viewers at home, Williams broke some tradition when spoke of his journey through football.
The premiership coach, Collingwood best-and-fairest winner and Port Adelaide icon - both in the SANFL and AFL said he "admired" the national league for announcing their support for the Voice.
Williams took the opportunity to deliver his thoughts on the topic dominating Australian politics, and expanded to detail where it fits into football.
"I am political," Willams said.
"I am saying that we have to do the right thing and understand how bloody hard it is for the Aboriginal players to make their way in the AFL.
"We need to support them, need to understand them. When we get them there, make sure that we give them opportunity and then absolutely demand the best from them and expect the best.
His stance was met with applause from the room filled with footy's elite and decision makers.
Williams said he wants to see Indigenous players thrive on the biggest stage.
In 2004 Williams coached Port Adelaide, the club he played 111 games for in South Australia, to their inaugural AFL premiership after entering the national competition just seven years earlier.

The team included Brownlow medallist Gavin Wanganeen, Burgoyne brothers Peter and Shaun and duel premiership-winner with both North Melbourne and the Power; Byron Pickett.
Shaun Burgoyne went on to play 407 career games, the most by an Indigenous player and third most games by any player at the top level.
Pickett was awarded the Norm Smith Medal as best on ground in the 2004 Grand Final.
"I want them (Indigenous players) to be best on ground, not just making up the numbers, and on grand final day that's what we saw when Port Adelaide won," Williams said.
Williams entered the Australian Football Hall of Fame after a playing career spanning 377 senior games, and an extended list of achievements in coaching.
