Latrell Mitchell has moved to pour water over suggestions his heart isn't with pulling on the Blues jumper after missing out on selection in Michael Maguire's New South Wales side for next week's Origin opener.

On Monday, Mitchell took to social media to squash reports referring to comments made by veteran rugby league journalist Phil 'Buzz' Rothfield the Indigenous All Stars captain wasn't "overly obsessed" with Origin honours, allegedly expressed in pre-selection conversations with Maguire.

"BUZZ ROTHFIELD at it again telling yarns. I'm always committed to playing for NSW," Mitchell wrote in a post to social media.

Mitchell added he "specifically said to Madge (Maguire)" he was fully committed if his form warranted a return to the Blues side for the first time since 2021.

The 26-year-old missed the 2022 and 2023 series with injury and was overlooked for a spot in the Blues squad announced on Monday.

Stephen Crichton and Joseph Sua'ali'i were picked in the centres with Dylan Edwards earning a spot in Mitchell's clubland position at fullback in place of outgoing skipper James Tedesco.

"I'm in. I bleed blue, I love the rivalry and the origin arena," Mitchell wrote.

"All I can do now is focus on Souths and winning more games."

Mitchell also threw his support behind the team put together to face the Maroons next Wednesday.

Rothfield's comments had come during his appearance on Sky Sports Radio's Big Sports Breakfast on Monday, where he added Mitchell has Souths' fortunes front of mind - which was commended, to his understanding.

The Bunnies are pinned to the bottom of the ladder after a disastrous start to the year.

Their 42-26 win over Parramatta at the weekend was just their second successful outing from their opening 11 matches.

"I had mail last week that he (Mitchell) might have had a meeting with Madge and Madge walked away from that meeting with an opinion that he wasn't overly obsessed about wearing the Blues jersey, he was dreadfully concerned about the trainwreck season that is South Sydney, and I think after they spoke I think Madge was of the opinion that he wants guys who aren't concerned about club footy and want to do their best for the state," Rothfield said.

"And you've got to give Latrell and Jack Wighton some credit in that area because I think they both could have been picked in this (NSW) side if, Wighton in particular, had been available.

"They're hurting about the Souths situation and they want to be there for (Bunnied coach) Ben Hornby and the rest of their teammates to try and get Souths' campaign back on the road."

Mitchell's form to start 2024 had been quizzed as opinions flooded on what the Blues line up should and could look like as they try to snap consecutive series losses to the Maroons.

Speaking post-selection, Maguire remained tight-lipped on his decision to leave Mitchell out of the squad.

"Every player is in the mix. But as I keep going back to, it was about how they're playing and how they're performing," he said.
