Brendan Doggett is circling in on a Sheffield Shield-winning performance with the ball as South Australia firm to claim the title for the first time in 28 years.

The Worimi seamer quickly picked up where he left off on Thursday, claiming the wickets of Test batters Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschange before stumps to dent Queensland's hopes of steering the contest back in their favour following a well below par first innings.

Doggett steered his side's early advantage with 6-31, including the key wicket of Khawaja, on day one, with Queensland posting a first innings score of 95 at Adelaide's Karen Rolton Oval.

Each other state has tasted success in the domestic red-ball final since South Australia last won in the 1995-96 season.

Queensland led by one run overnight on Thursday after reaching 3-177, having earlier bowled the hosts out for 271 on the back of a century from Jake Lehmann.

Three wickets fell by lunch on Friday, Doggett adding two to his match tally of 10 in his third Shield final, this time against his former side.

His final ball for Queensland won them the trophy in the 2020/21 decider.

Jack Clayton, who passed triple figures in the second session, remained Queensland's only remaining top order batter at lunch, having passed the half century mark with the visitors sitting 55 runs ahead at 6-231.

Ben Manenti removed Clayton lbw in the 102nd over.

In the morning session, Doggett removed middle order pair Ben McDermott (17) and Jimmy Peirson (5), for a second time in the match, trapped in front before Nathan McAndrew chipped in to end Michael Neser's contributions at the crease ahead of the break.

Khwaja (21) was first to go on Thursday afternoon, edging Doggett to third slip before Queensland reached 50.

Doggett thought he had Labuschagne caught in the deep a short time later before the Australian no.3 was called back due to a front-foot no ball, later rectified when the visiting captain picked out Jason Sangha at square leg after mistiming through the on side.

Queensland passed 250 and a lead of 100 after lunch on Friday.

They reached 7-337 sitting 161 in front going into the tea break, with Doggett holding figures of 4-98 form 30 overs.

With his 10th wicket for the match, Doggett moved into fifth on the Shield wicket-takers list for the summer with 32 scalps from seven appearances.

He trails McAndrew who sits atop with 38.
