The Tiwi Land Council chief executive has accused retailer Anaconda of applying "its own name to Tiwi country" as part of a promotional competition.
Last month the outdoor supplies chain has been advertising its "Anaconda Island" competition, giving customers "the chance to win one of two epic adventures", the ABC reports.
The company's website says competition winners will be awarded a trip with nine friends to "Anaconda Island" at the Tiwi Island Retreat.
Operated by the business Matt Wright, the retreat is located on Nguyu (Bathurst Island), one of two Tiwi Islands north of Darwin.
"Anaconda Island is Australia's ultimate adventure, where nature reigns supreme and adventure awaits!" the website states.
The website promotes "Anaconda Island" as being "extremely remote", while offering "a wide range of adventurous activities".
TLC chief executive Brendan Ferguson told the ABC the land council became aware of the promotion last week when "concerns were raised by a Tiwi community member".
"We are concerned that a commercial entity would deem it appropriate to apply its own name to Tiwi country," Mr Ferguson said.
Mr Ferguson said since learning of the promotion, the TLC has been "canvassing the views of Jikilaruwu traditional owners".
"We have also shared initial feedback from Tiwi stakeholders with the leaseholder in an effort to explore the parties' options to address those concerns," he said.
A TLC spokesperson later said after consulting with all parties, the land council had confirmed the promotion name was "not proposed by Anaconda".
"Tiwi Island Retreat and Anaconda are working together with the Tiwi Land Council and Tiwi people to rename the promotion and address traditional owners' concerns," they told the ABC.
Mr Ferguson said in the TLC's "promotion of economic opportunity for Tiwi people", partnerships with third parties were often required.
However, he said those partnerships needed to be "grounded in mutual respect, protecting the rights and interests of Tiwi people".
A spokesperson for the Tiwi Island Retreat said prior to formally engaging with Anaconda, it "informed the TLC about the relationship".
The spokesperson said the retreat had since been contacted by the TLC "to discuss concerns recently raised by traditional owners".
"We have committed to sit down with both the traditional owners and the TLC in the new year to openly discuss these concerns," Tiwi Island Retreat spokesperson said.
