Jack Wighton has been targeted with racist abuse on social media within hours of his move from the Raiders to join South Sydney being confirmed on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old shared the messages he received to his own Instagram account, where the user made a string of vilifying comments, including racist abuse.
"Stooping low here," Wighton added with his own comments. "For what reason little coward."
Wighton has since deleted his Instagram story.
The first message, sent by the user on Tuesday - before either club had confirmed news of his move, contained similar phrasing to when Raiders coach Ricky Stuart called Penrith Panthers player Jaeman Salmon a "weak gutted dog" in a press-conference during the 2022 NRL season.
"F**k off now you weak gutted dog," the user wrote.
The following comments, made the following day, included vile slurs towards the Wiradjuri man.
"Your (sic) a f***ing dog c**t," the user wrote.
"F**k off now you abo c**t."
Wighton's Canberra and Indigenous All Stars teammate Jamal Fogarty later expressed support for the Dally M Medallist.
In his own post Fogarty called for "strong consequences/action" for the culprits and tagged the Raiders, NRL and Rugby League Players' Association.
A number of fellow NRL stars commented in support of Wighton and condemning the abuse he received.
NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo told the Daily Telegraph the league's integrity unit is investigating the incident and will make moves to track down the culprit.
"It's absolutely abhorrent that we have people that talk to anyone in that way, whether they are a footballer or a member of the public," Abdo said.
"The integrity unit will now investigate to try to track down the person and take the appropriate action."
