Yorta Yorta journeyman Joel Hamling will remain a Swan in 2026 after signing a one-year extension after stringing together solid patches this season.

Debuting for the club in Round 1 against Brisbane, Hamling became the first Indigenous player to run out for the Swans at AFL level since Lance Franklin's retirement in late 2023.

The versatile tall made 14 senior appearances across 2025, making his way into the forward line from the back half of the field on occasions, after moving to Sydney from Fremantle ahead of the 2024 season.

Injuries have cruelled the 32-year-old's career.

Drafted to Geelong in 2011, the Broome-raised defender made his AFL debut with the Western Bulldogs in 2015 and played in the club's premiership the following year.

In 2017 he made the switch to his home state with Fremantle, playing the bulk of his so-far 105 senior games at the Dockers.

"Joel is a very versatile player who played on some of the league's best forwards last season and did extremely well," Sydney executive general manager of football Leon Cameron said.

"We are excited about him continuing for another year."

Early in the year, Hamling was a late addition into the Indigenous All Stars squad to play his former club at Optus Oval.

Last month, whispers rose of him equalling a league record of time with five clubs after cross-town rivals Greater Western Sydney reportedly showed interest in his services.

In May, playing against the Giants, Hamling kicked the first goal of his then-96 game career to help Sydney over the line.
