Former Australian Diamond and pathways pioneer Sharon Finnan-White will coach Queensland in the inaugural First Nations Netball Tournament in Naarm this September.

All-Indigenous sides with representation from each state and territory will compete at the pilot tournament, announced by Netball Australia this week.

Speaking to National Indigenous Times earlier this week, Netball Australia First Nations engagement lead Ali Tucker-Munro earmarked the initiative as a "game changer".

For Finnan-White, the venture "resonates deeply with my passion and ongoing dedication" towards greater representation at the elite level over 20 years.

Finnan-White became just the second Indigenous Australian to play for the national side when she made her Test debut in 1990, behind only Marica Ella-Duncan - sister to iconic rugby sibling trio and Wallabies Glen, Gary and Mark Ella.

She's also a former NSW captain and member of the state's Netball Hall of Fame.

Before her retirement in 2000, Finnan-White claimed two World Cup titles in 1991 and 1999.

Two decades would pass before Donnell Wallam would grow the list to three as a pioneer of Test players in 2022.

In recent years, Finnan-White has moved to increase pathways based in her adopted home in North Queensland, spearheading the debut of an all-Indigenous side into the Townsville premier competition and later establishing a high-performance academy for aspiring First Nations players.

Her Queensland side will feature a number of players who wrote their own piece of history as First Nations Black Swans players in their inaugural showcase at June's Pacific Netball Series.

Lily Cubby, Kiera Heffernan, Jayden Molo and Brook Lacey have been named in Finnan-White's squad.

"This inaugural competition represents the vision, passion, and long-standing dedicated efforts of First Nations leaders in netball who have relentlessly advocated for a sustainable culturally supportive national pathway to address the under representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players at the elite level," Finnan-White said.

"For over two decades, I have advocated strongly for a sanctioned national tournament for First Nations players, and I am thrilled to see this vision become a reality. This opportunity resonates deeply with my passion and ongoing dedication, and I am honoured to be appointed as the inaugural coach of Queensland's team for this momentous initiative.

"This event unites a diverse and often untapped talent pool of players and I trust will serve as a platform for national talent identification programs moving forward, including the Black Swans First Nations national team.

"I am particularly pleased to see our national body and member organisations working together to make this happen and wholeheartedly commend Alison Tucker-Munro for driving this initiative forward."

Former West Coast Fever defender and Torres Strait woman, Josie Janz-Dawson will coach Western Australia's team heading to the tournament.

Janz-Dawson is currently the highest-accredited First Nations coach in the state leading West Australian Netball League side Southside Demons.

She said her WA team will benefit from talent within the WANL and high-performance pathways in-waiting.

"For some of these players it will be a step in the right direction for their netball journey and hopefully with some gained experience, they will continue to strive for more beyond performing at the First Nations Cup," Janz-Dawson said.

Netball WA general manager of performance & pathway Sue Gaudion was "thrilled" she accepted the offer.

"While the team won't have much time to prepare for this new tournament, we are confident Josie will work with this team and provide them the best opportunity to showcase their talents," Gaudion said.

The First Nations Tournament is scheduled for September 13-15 at Victoria's State Netball Centre.
