A search is underway for a five-year-old girl missing from an Aboriginal camp near Mparntwe / Alice Springs after she disappeared early Sunday morning.

Northern Territory Police Force said the child, referred to as Sharon, was reported missing about 1.30 am after she could not be found at her home in Marshall Court at Old Timers Camp.

"She was last seen wearing a dark blue short-sleeve T-shirt with a white ring stripe around [her] neck and white ring stripe around the end of the sleeves, and a pair of black boxer-style underwear," NT Police said.

Senior Constable Ben Evans, who is coordinating the search, said about 30 people were involved in the operation. Drone and foot searches were conducted overnight, with helicopters, horses and all-terrain vehicles later joining the effort.

"Obviously, she's a young girl, so the main priority at this stage is trying to find her as quickly as possible," he said, as reported by the ABC, adding Sharon's family were "pretty distraught".

"We're having continuous communication with the family and a family liaison officer has been appointed to continue that communication as we conduct the search."

Senior Constable Evans urged anyone who "might have dash cam or CCTV footage from their residence to contact police on 131 444 and quote the reference number P26120934 with any information that could assist us with the search".
