A 43-year-old Aboriginal man has died in police custody in Kalgoorlie after being tasered and pepper sprayed.

WA Police said they responded to reports of a man behaving erratically with a knife at the intersection of Wilson Street and Carrington Street in South Kalgoorlie around 7.20pm on Sunday.

"Police attended and located the man at a residence on President Street with a self-inflicted injury," a Police spokesperson said on Monday.

"Officers attempted to negotiate with and detain the man, but he continued to behave in an aggressive manner. A taser and OC spray were deployed and the man was restrained.

"Officers immediately provided first-aid to the man and commenced CPR until the arrival of St John WA."

WA Police said the man was taken to Kalgoorlie Hospital, where he later died.

Due to the circumstance of the man's death, officers from the Major Crime Division and Internal Affairs Unit will investigate his death as a death.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

More than 620 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have died in custody since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody brought down its findings and issued over 300 recommendations in 1991.

2025 saw the most Indigenous deaths in custody in Australia since reliable national record-keeping began in 1979/80.
