Aboriginal leaders from across Western Australia have joined with National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People Sue-Anne Hunter in calling for sweeping reforms of the state's child protection system, a dedicated WA Commissioner for Indigenous children, and a First Nations children and families representative peak body in WA.

Commissioner Hunter met with Indigenous community leaders in Boorloo / Perth on Friday morning for a roundtable on the issue, having met with Elders and other community leaders in Port Hedland earlier this week.

The Commissioner's visit to WA came in the wake of reports first published by The Australian that as many as 15 Aboriginal children were being left alone in poor conditions, often for days at a time, in a Port Hedland home owned by the state government.

Friday morning's roundtable came after calls for an urgent meeting from community leaders, including human rights law and child protection expert Dr Hannah McGlade.

On Friday, Commissioner Hunter said the case was not an isolated one, with similar situations across the country.

"We are in fierce agreement that urgent attention is needed to protect the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children," she said.

"This is not the responsibility of the child protection system alone. This requires a whole of government approach. This cannot continue to be siloed.

"We will continue to see the same things happen again and again if urgent action is not taken."

Commissioner Hunter said the roundtable had agreed on two urgent calls to action: for the WA Government to legislate and establish a WA Commissioner for Indigenous children with the powers and independence to monitor and advance First Nations rights across the state, and to establish an independent peak body that represents all Aboriginal children and families to address coordination and accountability across the state.

"These are urgent actions which we require to happen immediately," she said. "None of this is new, they have been asking for this for a very long time, they just haven't been heard."

Dr McGlade, a member of the Noongar Family Safety and Wellbeing Council, described the gathering as a "historic meeting".

"We are calling for our voices to be heard... These recommendations we are calling for are of the utmost importance. The Aboriginal children's commissioner for WA was a recommendation of the Gordon Inquiry 25 years ago that has been neglected to this day," she said.

"We are talking about systems' failures and the lack of attention to the voices and concerns of Aboriginal women about what needs to change to keep our children and family safe.

"We are thinking about the future generations. If we don't act now, this is incredibly dangerous to children.

"We have the commitment, we have the solutions, and we want to go forward and work closely with the state government on these issues."

Council of Aboriginal Services WA CEO, Chad Stewart, said "policy leadership and questions of funding" were at the heart of the issue.

"Many of the reports and recommendations over the past few years have talked about the needs in community when it comes to child protection, the needs around Aboriginal family safety," he said.

"We are in agreement today around what those priorities are... the need for a dedicated commissioner for us - we shouldn't need the work of investigative journalists and the national commissioner to come over to put a spotlight in Western Australia. We need those mechanisms in place, a peak body as well as a state Aboriginal children's commissioner."
