Willie Rioli has announced his retirement from AFL football, aged 30.
The premiership Eagle and Port Adelaide favourite announced his decision on Monday night after 109 appearances and 151 goals at the top level, with one year remaining on his current deal.
Drafted to West Coast in 2016, Rioli played 51 games for the club, including their 2018 grand final triumph, before signing a four-year deal at the Power ahead of the 2022 season.
"I retire knowing I've given all I can to the game at the highest level," he said in a statement via Port, adding that he looks ahead to "playing my role in helping the next generation of First Nations players coming through".
"I made up my mind a couple of weeks' ago that this would be my last season and it was great to finish on such a high last Friday night at Adelaide Oval," he said.
"I want to see even more opportunities given to our young, talented small forwards at Port Adelaide in Joe Berry and Tom Cochrane. They're the future of our club. It's time for me to step aside.
"I've loved my time at both Port Adelaide and West Coast and made lifelong friends. And I thank the Glenelg Football Club for everything they did for me in preparing me for the AFL.
"I thank everyone who has provided me with such great support across my journey and I'll reach out personally to all those who have helped me along the way."
Rioli gave particular thanks to Eagles and Power fans for their support during his career.
The exciting small forward endured a difficult 2025 season, marred by online racial abuse, and a one-match ban for threatening Bulldogs player Bailey Dale.
Last month, Rioli revealed to a club podcast he almost walked away from the game earlier with mention, noting also his previous suspension for tampering with a urine test while still at West Coast. (It is widely acknowledged there was never any indication he took performance enhancing substances.)
Port Adelaide footy general manager Chris Davies congratulated Rioli on his career.
"Across two clubs Willie has contributed so much to the game," Davies said.
"He's incredibly skilled and exciting to watch, and played a key role in our top 4 finishes in 2023 and 2024 as a goalkicking small forward.
"We congratulate him on all he's achieved at both Port Adelaide and West Coast. He'll forever be an AFL premiership player, and he should be incredibly proud of that.
"Willie will always be part of the Port Adelaide Football Club and we wish him and his family all the best for the next chapter of their lives."
Rioli's exit came on the same day Port axed five players from their list following their farewell of long-time coach Ken Hinkley and veteran Travis Boak, and ahead of their new era under Josh Carr.
Yorta Yorta forward Jeremy Finlayson was amongst those told there was no offer on the table for 2026.
Finlayson, 29, signed a one-year extension for the season just ended last August.
He played 62 games for the Power between 2022 and 2025, featuring eight times in 2025.
Port's leading goalkicker in 2023, Finlayson arrived at Alberton after five seasons and 66 games at GWS.
