Hot on the heels of being selected as one of three designers to participate in First Nations Fashion and Designs and the Iconic's Incubator program, Gunggandji, Indiji Gimuy and Yarrabah designer Elverina Johnson has launched her second collection in collaboration with Taking Shape.

Her first collection with Taking Shape saw bright hues of green and blue in contrast with beautiful oranges and pinks. Previously she was inspired by her cultural background, having been immersed in both rainforest and sea culture.

Johnson's current collection with Taking Shape draws inspiration from Ngawayu Buluru (turtle and reef story).

Drawing on her own upbringing, Johnson said she wanted this collection to sing the importance of looking after the Great Barrier Reef.

"It's about the preservation of the Great Barrier Reef and the importance of the life that it has and for us to look after it and keep it sustainable," she said.

"Because if we don't look after it, well it won't look after us because it's what our people live off as well.

"And not only for it's survival but also to continue telling our stories through it."

A contrast from her previous collection, Johnson's new collection features dark blues reminiscent of the ocean, with a print drawn from the sea's marine life.

A limited collection, Johnson said when it comes to her work you can always expect colour.

"Definitely a lot of colour. But it's very different from the last collection," she said.

"So we've got a lot more swimwear, denim jackets, pants, sneakers.

"There's all sorts of other apparel as well like umbrellas, tea towels, bucket hats.

"It's very different but I'm looking forward to the launch of this collection."

The limited-edition collection features easy-to-wear casual pieces that are designed to be incorporated into daily wardrobes, including a reversible denim jacket and jogger, bomber jacket, pintuck tunic, sweat top, bamboo legging, an exclusive Elverina signature tee and sneakers.

The collection also features a swimwear range, including a kimono, rash vest, swimsuit, tankini, and swim shorts.

Johnson's collaborative collection is now in-stores at Taking Shape stores and online.
