Essendon Next Generation Academy recruit Anthony Munkara will make his highly anticipated VFL debut Sunday.

The talented 18-year-old has been named in the forward pocket for the Bombers' clash against Greater Western Sydney at the NEC Hangar.

He will play alongside three-time Essendon leading goal kicker and Western Bulldogs premiership player Jake Stringer.

Munkara joined the Bombers as a Category B Rookie selection in last year's AFL rookie draft under the AFL Next Generation Academy rules.

He has spent the past few months at Bombers' pre-season training increasing his workload and building his fitness base to endure the rigours of State League and potentially AFL footy.

Essendon's National Recruiting Manager Rob Forster-Knight described Munkara as a "very exciting talent".

"He played some great football at school level for Westminster and with West Adelaide at the start of (last) year," Forster-Knight told essendonfc.com.au

"He is a forward with excellent natural football ability, who's just scratching the surface with what we think he can do in the future, so we just need to ensure we get a good program around him to make sure he reaches his potential."

Munkara is one of the most exciting Tiwi Islands prospects to have emerged in years.

He burst onto the football scene with impressive performances for Tiwi Bombers' Premier League team during the 2021/22 NTFL season.

The 187cm forward excelled in two games for SANFL club West Adelaide's U18s team last year before moving back to the Northern Territory.

In the opening round of the 2022 SANFL U18 season, Munkara gathered 14 disposals, four goals and seven inside-50s.

He also showed his AFL capabilities for the NAB AFL Academy team against Collingwood's VFL outfit back last May.

Tex Wanganeen has been named in the other forward pocket for tomorrow's VFL game.

The son of 1993 Brownlow Medallist Gavin Wanganeen, Tex played five AFL games in his debut season for Essendon last year.

Former Geelong player Quinton Narkle will also play his first game in Bombers colours Sunday after signing with the club in February.

Narkle played 41 games for Geelong across five seasons before being delisted at the end of last year.

The midfielder trained with Richmond during the pre-season but was ultimately unsuccessful in securing a place on the Tigers' AFL list.

Narkle will also work with the young Indigenous players at the Bombers under his new role as Player Development Manager.
